May 29, 6:30pm EDT (via Zoom only) – Amit Sankhala

Amit Sankhala’s grandfather was a distinguished forest officer with the Indian Forest Service and Founder/Director of Project Tiger. Launched in 1973, it was acclaimed as the most successful conservation program of its day.

Since that time, conservation has remained an integral part of the Sankhala heritage and Amit has continued this legacy. As Managing Director of Encounters Asia, Yiher Resorts Pvt. Ltd and the Jamtara WIlderness Camp, his projects include Tiger Nation, a “citizen science” project which has created one of the largest databases of tigers remaining in the wild. Amit has lectured around the world on sustainable/eco-tourism. He also sits on the board of Wild Landscapes International, based in the United States, with a primary goal of conserving larger habitats and addressing human/animal conflict.

Amit is also a trustee of Tiger Trust, established by his grandfather in 1989. The trust educates children about wildlife, sets up medical camps in rural villages near India’s national parks, and works on legal cases against wildlife crime. Discovery Channel recently produced a film about the Sankhala family, “Tigerland”, part of an effort to raise money for Project CAT (Conserving Acres for Tigers). The film premiered at the Sundance Festival and is now available on Discovery Go and Amazon Prime in addition to being shown at other film festivals across the world. Follow Amit on:
