Plover Project

Mission: About 100 Piping Plovers have nested in NYC in recent years, and fewer than 8,000 plovers remain globally. Our mission is to protect endangered Piping Plovers and other fragile beach-nesting birds on New York City’s beaches through education, community engagement, and volunteer stewardship.

Work: Piping Plover & Shorebird Beach Ambassador Program. Together with our partners at the National Park Service and NYC Department of Parks and Recreation, we have a force of volunteers from the Rockaways and beyond working to connect daily with thousands of beachgoers from Breezy Point Tip to Far Rockaway. We help to educate folks about the importance of habitat protections and other simple tips to help our nesting visitors which need NYC beaches to survive.

Education: We have programs in schools from K-12, ranging from arts programs to high school citizen science curriculum. To learn more about our education programs or arrange an educational program for your school, please contact our education director, Ciara Fagan, ciara@nycploverproject.org.
