Lifer! The Thrill and Joy of Seeing New Birds

This month, our speaker, George Courtney, will share stories about his favorite “lifers”—birds he has seen for the first time during his birding adventures. He will discuss how he found these lifers, from useful tips and alerts he received to happy accidents along the way, as well as the entertaining anecdotes that accompanied these sightings.

George Courtney has been a professional photographer for over 20 years, specializing in events, performances, weddings, portraits, fine art, and, more recently, nature and bird photography. George began birding and photographing birds seriously during the Spring Migration of 2019, reigniting an interest in birds that started in his youth, thanks to an ornithology class at Woods Hole Summer School of Science on Cape Cod.

In recent years, George joined the NYC Plover Project, a group dedicated to educating the public about the threatened status of the piping plover and improving fledgling success rates along the shorelines of Queens, New York. He volunteers whenever he can, as a way to give back to the birds that bring him so much joy, and to observe one of his favorite species.

George regularly photographs birds in Central Park, Prospect Park, Fort Tilden, and Mashpee, Massachusetts. His work has been featured on the cover of the Riverside Park Annual Report (2021), in Cape Cod’s New Seabury Peninsula Reporter (February and May 2022), The Villager newspaper, and by several book authors.
