March 30, 1939 – January 30, 2024
It is with great sadness that we learned of the recent passing of Lynne Cashman, a long-time member who contributed greatly to the group’s activities. Lynne was an avid photographer who enjoyed life, nature and people around her, including her photography clubs (Sierra Photo NYC and Professional Women Photographers), a ski group, and a hiking club exploring the Hudson Valley. Her photography reflected her interests and wide-ranging travel to places such as Antarctica, Iceland, Europe, Nova Scotia, Hawaii and the American West.
Lynne was dedicated and helpful in planning and “hanging” our exhibitions. She was professional in her organizational skills and attention to detail, her willingness to speak up, and her way of simplifying complex problems. She had a wealth of knowledge about photographic equipment and was eager to share with members. On our many excursions together, she was always the first one out of the car, with her equipment, ready to engage the location with her camera. At the end of the day, she was the first one back, ready for good company and dinner!
Lynne had an active professional presence in addition to her contributions to the Sierra Photo NYC exhibitions. In 2016, her work was presented at the Berlin Biennial and in 2013 she had a solo show, Cuba Revisited, at St. Francis College in Brooklyn. Her work is in private collections including the New York Chapter of The American Institute of Architects and Elmhurst General Hospital in Flushing, NY. Her work has been viewed in shows at the Museum of the City of New York, The Center for Cuban Studies Art Space, St. Peter’s Church, the Callahan Center of St. Francis College, the Riverside Gallery in Beacon, NY and the Les Parish Gallery in Waitsfield, Vermont.
In the words of her Artist’s Statement: “My photographs not only reflect what I see, they portray how a particular scene makes me feel”.
In her earlier years, Lynne worked with a children’s sportswear company. She is survived by a 90-year old brother, nieces, and nephews. Those who wish to send cards or messages can do so through Lynne’s dear friend, Lenore Scholssberg, 441 West End Avenue, New York, NY 10024 or via email: lenorekaplan@yahoo.com.
We invite you to take a few moments to remember Lynne through some of her work on the following pages. At this writing, Lynne’s work also can be viewed on her website, https://www.lynnecashmanphotography.com.
